Monday, October 15, 2001 kicked off the fourth annual event that ran through November 15th. Participation in the event was at an all time high. A total of 14 youth groups registered to participate. In all, 453 youth participated in this year's event.
Participants were able to divert 4,881.43 pounds (2.44 tons) from out landfills. Groups recycled aluminum, plastic and glass beverage containers as well as newspaper.

to generous donations from our corporate sponsors, over $1,500 in cash and
prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places for the most recycled and for the top fundraiser.
Sponsors for the Fourth Annual Merced County Youth Recycle Drive were: Turlock Recycling, Merced Mall, BFI, Merced Target, Gilton Solid Waste Management and Starbucks.
An awards ceremony was held to honor the sponsors and participants on February 21st, 2002 during the Merced County Association of Governments Governing Board meeting. MCAG will be presented the "Building Community Partnerships" award to Turlock Recycling for matching funds of $1000 for the recycle drive. Our Civic award "Year in Excellence" was awarded to Sandy Lemas of Soroptimist & San Luis High for their continuous recycling efforts.
